Stella also meets and befriends Daria, a bat spirit and particularly troubled patient of the facility. Stella will lend a helping hand by providing new resources for the hospital, as well as by understanding the workings of the mysterious Charon Vending Machine. Stella will first befriend the hyena spirit Jackie, a well-meaning but dispirited lug who is overwhelmed by everything that must be done to keep the facility running. Now, what can you expect in today’s update? Stella sets sail for Overbrook Island, where problems abound at the dilapidated local hospital. Hence were born Beverly, the diminutive-yet-adorable owl spirit from our summer update. Next, we turned to the characters we already knew intimately, that we’d created early on but were unable to bring into the original game – still patiently waiting for their time in the spotlight, to have their stories written and told. We didn’t want to leave players puzzled as to what exactly happened in the story – so with our first content update, we added Lily, Stella’s sister, to help flesh out the story elegantly and close that main narrative loop.

Beyond that, as we delved into everything we had accumulated to craft the original game, it became clear that the team still had a lot of stories to tell in this world.įirst and foremost, we wanted to make sure we were telling Stella’s story properly. And although the team was quite pleased with the version of Spiritfarer at launch, we knew there was more we still needed to do. All this was absolutely heart-melting.Ĭlearly, fans had truly connected with the game. And even for how it had rekindled their passion for their jobs as healthcare professionals or their duties as caregivers. For the role it had played in soothing the grief wrought by the pandemic. Gratitude for how Spiritfarer had made them feel, think, or behave.

I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little more about how we got here.Īs we shipped Spiritfarer, our cozy management game about dying, during a global pandemic in August 2020, we felt a whirlwind of doubts and joy, a maelstrom of anxiousness and relief.Įarly reviews were good – dare I say great! But especially surprising were the emails, letters, and direct messages bearing heartfelt, kind words. It’s a victory lap of sorts for a game near and dear to us, one that we never dreamed would be embraced by one-million players and counting. Today, since we’re closing the book on the game for the foreseeable future, we’re adding the “Farewell Edition” subtitle to Spiritfarer. A lot of games with an artificial day-night-cycle, like some farming games, can be stressful for me, but Spiritfarer lets you unravel everything at your own pace.Yes, it’s the end of a long journey for Team Spiritfarer. But I wasn't rushed, my relationship with him didn't suffer, and he was incredibly grateful once he got it. I had to jump through an incredible number of hoops to get chicken to for him. My second spirit, Atul, asked me to make him some fried chicken.

There were also areas that allowed for me to farm harder-to-get items, like through the traveling turtles, and I could fast-travel using the bus stops manned by a charming sea lion.ĭespite the day-night-cycle, I never felt like time was running out, as you're never punished for taking your time to complete tasks. Players are rewarded for collecting all 89 recipes, the different types of fish and wildlife, gemstones and other materials. Fortunately, it does its best to make sure that I never feel like my time is being wasted. Spiritfarer is a game centered around small, mundane tasks to achieve several larger goals. Spiritfarer lets you unravel everything at your own pace. Spiritfarer Collectibles (Image credit: iMore) At first, I didn't understand where the mewling was coming from, only to look at Daffodil and find her proudly puffing her chest out and serenading the heck outta my carrots. Your adorable cat companion, Daffodil, SINGS WITH YOU. But… what if I can't be patient? I play The Plant Song! Stella can use her guitar to play for the plants, which prompts a rhythm minigame where you press buttons to the beat of the amazing song. Growing crops in the game can be a slow process, having to check in to water plants and just be patient. My favorite piece of the game's music is a little tune I like to call The Plant Song. The music that plays while you sail, as you're in different towns, and when you bring spirits to the end of their lives is always appropriate, using string instruments to tug at my own heart's strings (pun intended). You know a game's music is special when it blends so seamlessly into the gameplay that you find yourself feeling emotions, only to realize that the music was affecting you.
